From Research to Invention

The origin of our field test kits came from the need to measure the extent of Arsenic contaminants in Ron-Piboon district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. The on-site researchers needed a way to easily and quickly test water samples in the field and that would be sensitive to very low concentrations (according to the WHO standard of about 10 ppb). The research team found that commercially available field test kits were lacking in sensitivity and quite expensive.

Researchers from the Chemistry department, Mahidol University, with support from UNICEF decided to answer the challenge by developing an effective and sensitive test kit for use in the field. This project produced the first Arsenic field test kit developed by Thai researchers, which is also globally accepted. The kit has seen uses in various countries including Mongolia, Myanmar, China, Cambodia and Vietnam.

From Arsenic to other contaminants

With the success of the Arsenic test kit, the research team continued to develop test kits for other contaminants, receiving support from various organizations including the Pollution Control Department and the Center of Excellence for Innovation in Chemistry (PERCH-CIC). The result is an array of field test kits fit for commercial use. All test kits are portable, easy to use, give quick and accurate results, are of high quality and inexpensive.
